Introduction

Phoenix is one of the 13 cities to have representative teams of MLB, NFL, NHL and NBA (although two of them don’t actually carry the city name) and their latest effort in sports is to have their USL Championship team, Phoenix Rising FC, to join the MLS (Phoenix Rising FC had a 20 game winning streak which is the longest in league and North American soccer history and won the regular season title). Fans and players are craving for more soccer in this area and we searched for some of the most popular spots to play the beautiful game in Phoenix.

01. Reach 11 Sports Complex

If you play soccer and you’re in Phoenix, you must have come across the Reach 11 Sports Complex. With 18 lighted soccer fields, this place is basically heaven on earth for soccer players and lovers. Phoenix Parks and Recreations provides youth and adults soccer leagues here, but it has active pickup scenes as well for it’s open hours are from 5:30 am to 11pm daily (one of the longest daily operating hours we’ve seen in soccer complexes).

02. Waggoner Park

Waggoner Park is conveniently located in the middle of Phoenix area for easy gathering. The park does have full sized goals, but a handful of pickup groups play small sided (mostly 7v7) here during the weekday nights -- games booked throughout the whole week. The park is open from 6:00 am to midnight every day.

03. Escalante Park

The great thing about Escalante Park is that they have both regular soccer goals and small sized goals on the fields. Hence, depending on the size of group you get for a pickup game, you can conveniently choose to run a full pitch or a small sided game without always having to bring small nets. The field is well maintained, and just like Waggoner Park the hours are from 6:00 am to midnight every day.

04. Red Mountain Soccer Complex

Red Mountain Soccer features six professionally-groomed soccer fields. Soccer programs provided by City of Mesa and various youth groups are available, but it’s also open to the public and reservation by putting an application to Mesa Community Center. Open hours are from 7:00 am to 10:00 pm during the summer season and 8:00 am to 10:00 pm during winter season.

05. Thunderbird Park

Located just off the northeast side of Phoenix, the Thunderbird Park is a well known location for adult recreational players. It has six soccer fields and numerous adult pickup groups play actively on the weekend mornings. The park is open from 6:30 am to 8:00 pm daily and we have spotted several games scheduled for 7 am on the weekends so set your alarm to some early morning soccer.

Conclusion

We were surprised to see that many parks and fields have 5+ fields available in each location. There are abundant amounts of fields that are soccer friendly in the Phoenix / Scottsdale / Mesa Area so look for parks near you.
